My First Signs

hooter-sign.jpgAbout 10 years ago there was some major road work in our town and entrances to businesses where displaced. One pulled into bothcolon-sign.jpg Hooters and Jiffy Lube via a temporary entrance. This sign just made me laugh. I vowed to return with my camera! Not long after that a new business opened just down the street from my house. Just the premise is weird – colon hydrotherapy, but note the parking!

San Francisco Treats II

dscn2575.jpgWhen my son (15 at the time) and I visited my brother in Sandscn2574.jpg Francisco in 2005, we of course took in all the sights. Golden Gate Bridge, Exploritorium, Alcatraz, cable cars, Muir Woods, etc. Somehow I was equally transfixed by the signage. I don’t even want to try to pronounce this Japanese restaurant and the speed limit sign was at a U.S. Government installation–go figure.

San Francisco Treats

dscn2505.jpgSaw the one on the left in the parking area on the San Francisco side of the Golden Gate Bridge. I know that the intentions were good, but it doesdscn2539.jpg seem a bit counterproductive to TELL the thieves where to find your valuables. The second sign is in Marin County as you exit the ferry from San Francisco. Darn, and I was planning to bring my nuclear weapons with me. Thank goodness I saw this sign and was able to keep my warhead out of Marin County and in the trunk of my car in San Francisco!

Edinburgh says Yes

Our #1 son just received word that he has been accepted in the BSc Honours Physics program at the University of Edinburgh. He now waits to hear from his top choice, St. Andrews. If St. Andrews does not offer him a place, it looks like Edinburgh will be his choice. There is a major scholarship for American students at SA and the deadline for the application is February 28th. He is hopeful that he hears in a few days!

Pet Peeve

Don’t get me wrong, I do like the family pets. I just wish that the family did more of the pet-raising. I am not a dscn0676.jpgcat lover but tolerate two in the house. Because they wake up at 5 am and so do I, guess who feeds them? I clean the litter pan more often than I should. The family begged to get a dog that immediately latched onto me. It listens only to me and just as I do with the cats, I am the main caretaker of this dog in the family (food, water, walks). I am writing this at 7 am on a Sunday. The cats decided to play with a paper bag at 5 am and the family is able to sleep through it. Not I.

Aberdeen says Yes

Dan found out yesterday that he’s in at University of Aberdeen. We still wait on replies from Edinburgh and St. Andrews. Today the kids get to sleep in a little as there is a 2 hour delay due to freezing rain. I, of course, get the phone call at 5:25 am to tell me that we don’t have to be in school until 9:45. Instead of returning to sleep, I make breakfast, get the morning paper from the front sidewalk (yes the rain is freezing, I confirm), and then settle in to checking email, writing a couple of Twitter posts and this entry. I am beginning to realize why I enjoy this so much. I do like to write and this allows me the chance to write short thoughts and have them “published” without delay. Even if no one reads the blog, I was able to write down my musings. Nice outlet for a wandering mind.
